Cassie is one of the 3% of the human race to survive a devastating attack on the planet earth by an alien race. Her family has all been killed by the aliens, and she is in hiding at an Ohio farmhouse with another boy named Evan. Her old crush, Ben is training at a military base on how to fight back against the aliens, and is later joined by Cassie’s younger brother as well. The aliens are systematically seeking and killing off the rest of the human race and many have disguised themselves as humans in order to seek out any survivors. Cassie soon learns that Evan, her boyfriend, is not all that he seems as well and not only has to deal with surviving annihilation, but dealing with the fact that she has fallen in love with the enemy

Bennie needs a job in order to be allowed to live in the sanctuary of Mountainside. He can’t seem to find one, and his only option is the one he is loath to take: Zombie Hunter. His apprehension for the position is because his brother is regarded at the best Zombie Hunter around and Bennie has never forgiven his brother for saving him from a zombie attack and leaving their parents behind to die. But he relents and soon learns that being a Zombie Hunter is more than it seems. It is giving the dead the respect they deserve, rescuing other people not just from zombies, but from other humans that have taken to pitting zombies and children against each other for sport. Along the way, Bennie realizes he was wrong about his brother on so many levels and begins to find his place at his brother’s side.

Corrigan is a radical monk in an order left unidentified and vague. He often amiably disagrees with other monks views and is ostracized by many around him who feel his charity is unwanted. He often aids local prostitutes, to the disdain of their pimps. He also frequently visits the elderly and ends up falling in love with a nurse there. His love and devotion to being a monk meets in turmoil to his love for the nurse. Corrigan is critically injured when a car sideswipes a van he is driving when he is transporting one of the prostitutes from a court hearing.

Tom is a guy who has returned from World War I to Australia. He and his young wife move to a secluded island where they can both enjoy peace and quiet and raise a family. Unfortunately, he and his wife suffer two miscarriages and a stillbirth, hope for a child seems far from their reach. Then one day a boat washes ashore, carrying a dead man, and a baby. It is like a gift from God. And although Tom wants to report the baby to the shore, his wife has already become so attached that he decides to go against his normal character and relents to his wife’s wishes. They soon learn that the baby’s mother is still alive on the mainland and is beside herself with grief. Not believing that her husband and daughter are lost to the sea forever. It is the notion of "maternal impression", which holds that the baby in the womb can be influenced by the mother's experiences and emotions. Show the mother a monkey, get a monkey. Give her a fright, and her fear will be written on her deformed baby. So Eliza plans to have an apothecary abort her baby in exchange for cleaning his house. The apothecary sees this as a prime opportunity to study what he can do to essentially create a monster in the womb. Eliza is subject to physical and mental anguish.

Kaladin is a character who loses everything he cares about time and time again. He first loses his brother in a battle, and since then has made it his personal mission to protect all who serve with him. He has a knack for training and making great warriors out of men who would otherwise be just thrown in the fray as a sacrifice likes pawns on a chess board. He fails to protect his group of men, then tries to lead a slave mutiny and men die for that as well, and then he fails to protect his crew who carry heavy bridges across chasms so the main army can advance. Because the bridges are vital, they are often the main target of attack, and his crew is known as the one with the least life expectancy. After deep depressions, contemplating suicide, and putting himself in harms way for his crew, he finally begins to hope again that he can protect those around him.

August (Auggie) Pullman is a completely normal ten year old boy, on the inside. August was born with an extreme congenital facial abnormality and was not even expected to survive past infancy. Home-schooled his entire life by his mother and sheltered by his loving family, August's world changes as he courageously enters the fifth grade at Beecher Prep, a private school in Manhattan. August creates an atmosphere of inspiration, unconditional love and triumph. He reminds his classmates and community members that, in life, compassion and kindness will always overcome!
