It is the notion of "maternal impression", which holds that the baby in the womb can be influenced by the mother's experiences and emotions. Show the mother a monkey, get a monkey. Give her a fright, and her fear will be written on her deformed baby. So Eliza plans to have an apothecary abort her baby in exchange for cleaning his house. The apothecary sees this as a prime opportunity to study what he can do to essentially create a monster in the womb. Eliza is subject to physical and mental anguish.

He fails to protect his group of men, then tries to lead a slave mutiny and men die for that as well, and then he fails to protect his crew who carry heavy bridges across chasms so the main army can advance. Because the bridges are vital, they are often the main target of attack, and his crew is known as the one with the least life expectancy. After deep depressions, contemplating suicide, and putting himself in harms way for his crew, he finally begins to hope again that he can protect those around him.
