I recommend the book, "The Way of Kings" by Brandon Sanderson. This is a Fantasy book and is a book I read this past summer.
The book follows three storylines. One is of Kaladin, a soldier who feels cursed and unable to protect the men who follow him into battle and is haunted by their memory. Another is Dalinar Kholin, a commander of another army. Ten armies fight against each other against the same enemy. They are fighting over crystal-like objects called spheres. Spheres are not only currency but a source of immense power and magic. The third character is Shallan, who is desperately seeking an apprenticeship with a highly esteemed scholar known to never take on any apprentices. She says her motives are purely the drive for knowledge, but she has more sinister plans that stem from her family hitting a very rough patch and her desire to restore the status of her family.
All of three of these stories run parallel to each other but there is a deeper inference that they are some how all connected.
The world that Brandon Sanderson has created is so rich and unique and new it is hard to imagine it took only 10 years to prepare and write this book.
Brandon Sanderson really knows how to create rich, diverse, colorful, and believable characters. You will be hooked just like I was once you start reading this book!
