This book shows us the downside of an unbalanced community. The book teaches readers the qualities of being an individual. It also teaches the readers that suffering is an important factor in our lives because it teaches us to appreciate that delicious bagel.

This is a book that exposes the reader to another way of life where everyone in a community depends on everyone else (in a positive way). Lois Lowry teaches a lesson of questioning the way of life your community knows/practices. I think students who read this book will benefit by learning a few valuable lessons, as well as opening their mind to accept other lifestyles than their own.

Reading this book is a good way of finding out why there shouldn't be too many rules in society. It has a theme of unity, because of how the community works together. It’s story is well-paced, and it is a very interesting read with a good moral: when there are no difficulties in life, it becomes not worth it.
