Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman is the book I recommend and the last book I read. There is a television show that is loosely based on the book. It is the non-fiction story of Piper Kerman who was placed in a federal prison ten years after a drug transporting incident. I like this story because it realistically portrays life in prison (minimum security) and the women that Piper befriended during her stay. She comes from an Ivy League college background but found so much common ground based on her emotions and openness to the lives of her fellow prisoners. She brings the stories of their lives to life and finds great humanity and humility within the prison walls. Her final recommendations for a more just penal system are well articulated.
