I would like to recommend the book, American Gods by Neil Gaimon. This main character of this book, Shadow, just out of prison, is hired by a man named Mr. Wednesday for a secret job. Unbeknownst to Shadow, Mr.Wednesday is actually the God Odin of Greek Mythology. We learn that many old Gods are slowly disappearing and fading away. These gods are scattered all over America, brought from across the oceans by those who traveled here long ago. The idea of these Gods was enough to manifest them into existence on America's soil. They are bound here as long as people believe or know of them but there are other Gods and beliefs that would have these old Gods disappear, as this is the natural order of old beliefs and religions.
The book is so much more than old Gods fighting to survive, it is a journey across America, seeing old places in a new way, and revisiting old beliefs that still cling to our history. Each God Shadow meets while in Mr. Wednesday's employment is intricately introduced and if you are a fan of old Mythology, seeing how these Gods survive in modern America because they were brought over in someone's mind is spectacularly written. There are a lot of Gods that I did not recognize or understand who they are, but it did not make this book any less enjoyable.
It is a fantastic story that anyone would enjoy and I highly recommend it!
